Editors note: Jules Bakery is open and our business is good this summer because we are far away from flood waters. However, it is with a heart full of hope that I talk with you about the flooding devastation that has impacted our city and to the south in Iowa City. In my lifetime I have seen two hundred-year floods and now a five-hundred-year flood that nearly stripped our city away. Far too many entrepreneurial small business owners watched as their dreams were carried away on the flood waters. One cannot even begin to look for the thread of hope until all the damages are assessed and community leaders determine the future development plans for our river walk and downtown area. We at Jules Bakery -- while located in Marion and unaffected by flood waters -- believe in the spirit of our people and Cedar Rapids. This is our city, where we live, where we play and were we celebrate.

It is humbling to say we need your support both in spirit as well as financially. Through no fault of our own we find ourselves looking at billions of dollars in damages. Through no fault of our own!! We support our elected officials and Chamber of Commerce staff as they start the process that will undoubtedly mean some very very difficult decisions. We understand this and support them. We will do our part as we are called on to do. All we ask is that you be smart. Look forward and create something for us that is stunning.
